The Breathtaking Wineries of
Old Mission Peninsula - Traverse City, Michigan

If you have already experienced such American coastal vineyards as Napa, Sonoma, Long Island, or Upstate New York - or even if you haven't - the beautiful wineries of Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, Michigan should definitely be added to your "to do" list. While this stretch of Michigan's northwest coast features more than 40 vintners, Old Mission's vineyards offer a sampling of some of the area's most stunning scenic spots, not to mention world class wines.
The 18 mile long peninsula is situated in Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay on the earth's 45th parallel (exactly halfway between the North Pole and the Equator), an ideal location for European grape growing. Warm waters prevent early frosts and heavy lake effect snow keeps the vines well-insulated during the winter. Old Mission vineyards are recognized nationally and internationally for excellent handcrafted Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, and sparkling and ice wines. Fruit wines, like cherry and apple wines, cherry port and cherry sangria, are also area specialties.

Old Mission is home to five distinct wineries and tasting rooms, and two more are scheduled to open this fall. Peninsula Cellars, created in 1994 by cherry farmers, is housed in a restored 19th century schoolhouse. Chateau Grand Traverse, northern Michigan's oldest vineyard, is located high on a hill with spectacular views of the Bay and features a charming guest house. Enjoy the old world brick and mahogany tasting room at Brys Estate Vineyard and Winery. Savor delicious wine and incredible views at the sprawling Chateau Chantal vineyard, winery and French style B&B. Last, but not least, the cozy tasting room at Bowers Harbor Vineyard which overlooks Lake Michigan's historic Bowers Harbor, provides another picturesque backdrop for wine tasting on Old Mission.
With summer "wine and jazz fests," winter gourmet cooking classes and year-round tastings, the wineries on Old Mission Peninsula make for a perfect weekend getaway during any season! Old Mission's next big event - the first annual "Old Mission Peninsula Wine & Food Celebration" - takes place on September 8, 2007, from Noon to 5:00 pm. Click here for more details.
