More Chicago Boutiques and a Sampling of Local Couture

Browsing the West Loop
Whether you’re searching for a pair of irresistible red patent leather Mary Janes, a black leather clutch, or a pewter colored satin top, why not head to the West Loop and explore what the boutiques have to offer?

Ouest
From the turquoise ostrich feathers to the Chanel books on the mahogany, shoe-adorned table, Ouest is bringing a little French style and sensibility to the West Loop. Kelly Bry and Courtney Plumb, formerly of Krista K on Southport Avenue, opened Ouest (which means "West" in French) just over a year ago. The classy boutique is "inspired by the timelessly elegant French woman" and carries everything from casual to evening wear.

As you step into Ouest, rich seasonal reds, blues, purples and grays greet you, as well as patent leather shoes and handbags. Patent leather is perfect for a Chicago autumn - protected from the rain, sleet or snow unlike suede. Try on creations by French designers Barbara Bui, Sonia Rykiel and many others in the cute cabana-like dressing rooms. And, check out accessories like the Japanese obi, a wide belt worn with kimonos which can be worn over dresses and knits.

Bess & Loie
Owner Allyson Hoeb named her shop after her two grandmothers. And, from the old photographs and candy dishes, to the antiques and Allyson's laid back, take-your-coat-off-and-stay-awhile attitide, the boutique will make you feel right at home. Browse beautiful handbags, including creations by local designers Sharon Elaine and Bocue, as well as jewelry and men's neckwear.

And, don't miss the Bess & Loie's recently opened Lip Lab. Created by ex-Hollywood makeup artist Abbe Silverman, Lip Lab can design a custom, beautifully textured color just for you. Brushes, pencils, primers and other lipwear products are also available.

A Look at Chicago Couture

Chicagoans do not often have the opportunity to immerse themselves in high fashion. And, since I consider myself a fairly typical Chicagoan, it's no surprise that Chicago Fashion Focus' Allure of Couture runway show in Millenium Park was a new experience for me. Arriving at the tent in Millennium Park was like entering another world. From a floor-length silver sequined dress to dressy jeans with a fitted jacket, the crowd effectively exhibited Chicago’s diverse taste in fashion.

The show featured twelve designers-to-watch, including James De Colon, Barbara Bates, Calvin Tran, Horacio Nieto, Double Stitch (Erika and Monika Simmons), D'Wayne Lorenzo, Sytivia Wikzynska, Siyata Gozder, Price Walton, Kristina Sparks and Jack Cave and Nick Cave. Double Stitch exhibited a beautiful line entirely crocheted by hand, including swimsuits. Kristina Sparks featured a coat made solely of athletic shoes, and Calvin Tran turned heads with his multicolored floor-length silk halter dress.
